No fewer than 77, 000 persons
from Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, have been forced out of
their homes and have become refugees in other towns.
Gwoza has been occupied by Boko Haram insurgents for over four months.
The Chairman, Board of Trustees of Gwoza Christian Communities, Mr Williams Naga, said this on
Tuesday while presenting food items donated by the Borno State Government to the Internally Displaced Persons in Maiduguri.
Naga 16,000 residents of Gwoza were in camps for Internally Displaced Persons in Maiduguri.
He explained that over 46,000 IDPs from Gwoza were currently taking refuge in nine different villages while 15,000 were staying in camps created by government outside the state capital, Maiduguri.
He added that the 16,000 displaced persons from Gwoza in Maiduguri were currently taking refuge in seven camps in the Borno State capital.
The Chairman said Governor Kashim Shettima has given N10m for the upkeep of the IDPS in the state capital and N2m to facilitate the transportation of those in Cameroon to Nigeria.
The Distribution Committee Chairman, Mr Haruna Amodu, said out of the N10m the governor donated, N6m was spent on the procurement of food stuff for the IDPs.
Amodu stated that apart from the government ‘s assistance, the former Religious Affairs Commissioner, Alhaji Mamman Durkwa, personally donated 100 bags of rice and four cows to ameliorate the hardship of the IDPS.
