Chairman of the Yenagoa branch of the
Nigerian Bar Association, Dr. Anthony Okorodas, has described electoral
fraud as the worst form of corruption because it robs the entire people
of their right to choose who should govern them.
Okorodas said this while delivering a
lecture during the annual Law Week of the National Open University of
Nigeria, Yenagoa Centre, in Bayelsa State on Monday.
He said that a true, incorruptible and
independent judiciary was crucial to the survival and sustenance of
Nigeria’s nascent democracy.
Speaking on the topic entitled, “True
judicial independence: An instrument for sustaining Nigerian Democracy”,
the NBA chairman said it was an irony in the country that the most
important element of modern-day democracy, which is the conduct of
periodic elections, was now the greatest source of threats to the
nation’s embryonic democracy.
He said, “Politically speaking, an electoral fraudster is injustice personified.
“It is sad to note that our electoral process is characterised by violence and countless forms of corrupt practices.’’
