Police arrest teenager in connection with attack on champion boxer Anthony Crolla
A 17-year-old boy was today being quizzed by detectives over the attack on champion Manchester boxer Anthony Crolla.
The
teenager, who has not been named, was arrested early today on suspicion
of assault, burglary and possessing drugs with intent to supply.
He is in custody at a police station in Greater Manchester and is expected to be questioned by detectives throughout the day.
Greater
Manchester Police confirmed that a 46-year-old woman was also arrested
on suspicion of possessing drugs with intent to supply and is also being
quizzed.
Crolla, 28, from New Moston, remains in the Royal Oldham Hospital after suffering a fractured skull and a broken foot when he tackled burglars. Police said today he was ‘recovering well’.
The former British lightweight champion returned to his New Moston home to discover the house next door’s burglar alarm going off.

Two burglars had broken in and searched the house before jumping over a garden fence, police said.
The
popular boxer - known to fans as ‘Million Dollar Crolla’ - gave chase
and caught one of them, but the other smashed a concrete slab into his
head before both ran off.
In a statement, Greater Manchester
Police said today: “Police have now arrested a 17-year-old boy on
suspicion of burglary, assault and possession with intent to supply
drugs. He remains in police custody for questioning.
“A
46-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of possession with
intent to supply drugs. The victim is recovering well in hospital.”
Witnesses and anyone with information is being asked to call police on 0161 856 9035 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The
attack and the extent of his injuries has meant he has had to call off
his scheduled January 23 WBA world title fight with Richard Abril in
Manchester.
Brave Crolla however has spoken to the M.E.N. of his
determination to return home from hospital to spent Christmas with his
partner Fran Sanderson and their one-year-old son Jesse.
Thanking
his fans for their good wishes, he added: “I feel blessed to have this
amount of support. I was only doing what any normal person would do in
protecting my neighbour’s property.
“Despite everything I’m determined to fulfil my dream and come back to become a world champion in 2015.”
