Ijaw National Congress, INC, apex
body of the Ijaw nation, has thrown its weight behind the governorship
candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2015 election in Rivers
State, Mr. Dakuku Peterside.
INC also
hailed the APC for listening to the cry of the Ijaw in its choice of Peterside
as the party’s candidate.
National
Publicity Secretary of INC, Mr. Victor Burubo, in a statement, yesterday, in
Port Harcourt, said it stood by its resolve to support whichever political
party that would respect the Ijaw aspiration by fielding a governorship
aspirant of Ijaw extraction.
“At a
meeting that involved market women, leaders and elders of Ijaw, it was agreed
that the Ijaw will support any political party that will respect our aspiration
and field an Ijaw governorship candidate.
“INC
agreed that the next Rivers State governor must come from the riverine part of
the state and the APC has responded to the agitation of the Ijaw with the
choice of Peterside,” the statement said.
In a
related development, major stakeholders from the different ethnic nationalities
in Rivers State, under the aegis of Rivers State Elders and Leaders’ Council,
RELEC, have said that the a riverine person must become the occupant of Brick
House from May 29, 2015 to ensure justice, equity and fairness, since Rivers
governors since 1999, Dr. Peter Odili, Sir Celestine Omehia and Rotimi Amaechi,
are from the upland part of the state.
The
elders also described the endorsement by the Rivers caucus of the APC of
Peterside, as the party’s governorship candidate, as a step in the right
direction.
