Police in Lusaka, capital of Zambia, have arrested eight people for carrying offensive weapons, police said on Tuesday.
The eight people were found with 12 machetes and three axes and were involved in a fracas on Saturday which left three people injured, Zambia Police Service Spokesperson Charity Muganga-
Chanda said without revealing whether the arrested people were from any political party.
The police have called on all citizens to remain peaceful ahead of the election and vowed that the police would not hesitate to arrest any person involved in any form of violence.
Zambia’s interim leader Guy Scott on Tuesday announced that a presidential by-election will be held on Jan. 20, 2015 after the death of President Michael Sata on Oct. 28 at London’s King Edward VII Hospital where he had gone for a medical check-up.
So far, various presidential candidates from various political parties have launched campaigns to contest the election.
